DRDO successfully tests High-Speed ​​Expendable Aerial Target exercise


Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully test fired the indigenously developed High Speed Expendable Aerial Target, Abhyas, from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Odisha during January 30 to February 02, 2024. Flight tests were conducted with four different mission objectives in the modified powered configuration. It used a single booster designed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad, to provide low launch acceleration.

The exercise has been developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as a target for testing missile systems. Objectives such as safe release of the booster, launcher clearance and required launch velocity were achieved. During flight trials, various parameters such as required endurance, speed, speed-change, altitude and range were successfully validated.

'Abhyas', designed by DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), provides a realistic threat scenario for weapon systems practice. It has been designed for autonomous flight with the help of auto pilot indigenously manufactured by ADE.

It has systems to increase radar cross section, visual and infrared required for weapons practice. It has a laptop-based ground control system with which the aircraft can be integrated and perform pre-flight checks, in-flight data recording, post-flight replay and post-flight analysis. 'Abhyas' requires minimal logistics and is also cost effective compared to imported counterparts.

The recently tested systems have been realized through production agencies – Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T Defence). With production agencies identified, 'Abhyas' is ready for production. This system has export potential and can be presented to friendly countries.
