India Achieves Record Electricity Supply Amid Surging Demand

India successfully met its highest-ever peak electricity demand of around 256 gigawatts (GW) without any major shortage, marking a significant milestone in the country’s power sector. The record demand was recorded on April 25 amid an intense heatwave sweeping across several regions, which sharply increased the use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and coolers.

Despite the surge, the national grid managed to supply the full demand during peak daytime hours, reflecting improved capacity and better grid management. The achievement was supported by a strong contribution from renewable energy, especially solar power, along with conventional sources like coal and gas. Officials noted that the peak demand of about 256 GW surpassed the previous record of around 252 GW set just a day earlier, highlighting the rapid rise in electricity consumption driven by extreme temperatures.

The development underscores India’s growing ability to handle rising energy needs through a mix of generation sources and improved infrastructure. However, experts caution that sustained high demand—particularly during evening hours when solar generation drops—could continue to test grid stability in the coming months.

With peak demand projected to rise further this summer, the focus is now on enhancing storage capacity and ensuring round-the-clock power reliability across the country.
